Questions people ask about Anfold answered in plain words.
What Anfold does, where its numbers come from, how fuel works, and where the limits are.
The basics
6 questionsWhat is Anfold?
Anfold is a food-and-training journal and assistant for iPhone and Android. You describe meals and workouts in your own words, and Anfold turns them into entries you review, with nutrition and training load worked out. It also answers questions about what you’ve logged and proposes meal plans for one to seven days.
Who is it for?
Most people would benefit from a nutritionist. Most people don’t have one. Anfold tries to fill some of that gap: easy enough for a regular Tuesday, detailed enough that a dietitian could plug a client into it.
Anfold isn’t a nutritionist, a dietitian or a coach, and it doesn’t replace one.
Do I have to weigh my food?
No. You don’t have to pick a category, search a database, or weigh anything to start. “Chicken bowl for lunch, a latte, and a 4 km easy run” is a valid entry, and Anfold fills in likely amounts.
If you know the grams, add them and the numbers get closer. Either way, you review the draft before it counts.
Can I log with a photo?
Yes. Add a photo to help identify ingredients. You still review the draft before it counts.
Can I fix what Anfold drafted?
Yes. Every meal and workout you describe starts as a draft. You review it, change what looks off, and accept it. Only accepted entries count toward your daily and weekly totals.
Which phones and languages does it support?
iPhone (iOS 15.1 or later) and Android (7.0 or later). The app is in English and German, with metric or imperial units. There’s no web app.
The numbers
5 questionsWhere do the nutrition numbers come from?
Anfold breaks a meal into ingredients and matches each one to an entry in a nutrition database. Today that’s USDA FoodData Central, and more databases are being added. If the database has the food in a different state, for example raw when you ate it grilled, the values are converted to how it was cooked. When there’s no usable match, AI estimates the values.
Every value carries one of three labels: “Verified Database”, “Verified Database, Transformed” or “AI Deduced”.
Does AI calculate my calories?
No. AI reads your description, drafts the entry and answers your questions. The arithmetic runs in code, on database values: nutrients per ingredient, the cooking adjustment, and calories from the macros.
When the database has no fitting entry, AI estimates the values instead, and they’re labeled “AI Deduced”. In meal plans, AI names the dishes and code works out the portions.
How does cooking change the numbers?
Cooking changes a food’s weight and some of its nutrients, so the same chicken breast lands at different numbers raw, grilled or fried. Anfold reads how each food was cooked and adjusts for 23 cooking methods, using USDA nutrient-retention and cooking-yield data.
Frying oil is counted once. If your meal lists the oil, that’s the fat that counts. If it doesn’t, Anfold adds a typical amount of absorbed oil to fried foods.
How are calories burned and training load worked out?
Calories burned start from standard MET values for the activity, adjusted for effort and terrain. Strength sessions count working sets and rest separately.
Training load is shown per muscle, next to a cardio load and a total load, so running and lifting add up in one place. Strength, running, cycling, swimming, yoga, climbing, team sports and more are each calculated their own way.
How exact are the numbers?
They’re estimates, not measurements. They’re useful for seeing patterns across days and weeks, not for clinical decisions. Giving amounts and saying how the food was cooked makes the biggest difference.
Planning and the assistant
3 questionsCan Anfold make a meal plan?
Yes, for one to seven days. You pick the start date, which meals to plan (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks), how much cooking you’re up for, and how much repetition is fine.
Anfold proposes dishes that fit your calorie target. It works around meals you’ve already scheduled and adds back part of the calories from planned workouts. AI names the dishes; the portions and numbers come from the food database and code.
You review each day: keep the dishes you like, adjust the rest, then accept. Nothing reaches your day until you do. Meal plans need a completed profile.
What can the assistant do?
Ask about your day or your week, and the answer comes from what you’ve logged. The assistant can also draft entries from a message, schedule meals and workouts ahead, look up everyday foods, and start a meal plan.
Ask what to eat, and it checks what’s left of your targets today and offers a few options. Entries it drafts from a message only count once you accept them.
What are the personalities?
The personality changes the tone, not the data Anfold draws on. The default is Anfold, calm and practical. You can also switch to Drill Sergeant, Grandma, Santa, Overlord or Butler.
Fuel and pricing
3 questionsIs Anfold free?
Anfold is free to download, and every feature is on every plan. The AI parts use fuel. New accounts start with 30 fuel, and you can subscribe or buy a refill when you need more.
What is fuel?
Fuel is Anfold’s in-app balance. Anfold uses fuel for the AI parts (drafting entries, generating insights, planning meals), and bigger jobs use more: a seven-day meal plan takes more than one meal description. Re-adding a saved entry from your Library uses no fuel.
What’s the difference between a subscription and a refill?
A subscription adds fuel every month, and that fuel is used first. A refill is a one-off purchase, and its fuel carries over until you use it. Current prices are in the App Store and Google Play.
What Anfold doesn’t do
3 questionsDoes Anfold track sleep or sync with a watch or health app?
No. Anfold works from what you describe: meals, workouts, notes, and quick check-ins for energy, mood, body and focus. You can mention sleep in a note or a check-in, but Anfold doesn’t track sleep and doesn’t sync with health apps or wearables.
Can it scan barcodes or find branded products?
No. Anfold’s food data today covers everyday generic foods, not branded or packaged products, and there’s no barcode scanner. For a packaged food, describe what it is and how much you had. Anfold matches it to a similar generic food where it can and labels the values it had to estimate.
Does it make workout plans?
No. Anfold plans meals, not training. Meal plans account for the workouts you’ve scheduled, but Anfold doesn’t create training plans.
Safety and your data
3 questionsIs Anfold medical advice?
No. Anfold is for personal tracking. It is not a medical device and does not give medical advice. Its numbers are estimates and can be wrong. If you have a health condition, talk to a professional before making changes based on the app.
What happens to my data?
Anfold uses your entries to run your account: drafting entries, analyses and answers. Anfold doesn’t sell your data. The privacy policy explains what is collected, who processes it and your rights under the GDPR.
How do I delete my account?
You can delete your account in the app, from your account settings. The account deletion page has the steps, what gets deleted and what has to be kept for legal reasons.
