How Anfold works and where the numbers come from.

Anfold uses AI to read messy descriptions, draft entries, and answer follow-up questions. For nutrition and training numbers it leans on structured data, calculations, and visible assumptions. These pages show where the numbers come from, where they are estimated, and where the limits are.

How nutrition is calculated

Nutrition starts from ingredients, quantities, preparation, and source data. When a value is transformed or estimated, Anfold keeps that context visible.

How training load and calories burned are estimated

Anfold estimates calories burned and training load from what you log: duration, intensity, sets, reps, and terrain when available. Useful context, not a medical measurement.

What AI does, and what the math does.

AI

AI handles the language.

  • Reads what you wrote (and photos, if you add them)
  • Splits a meal into ingredients and amounts
  • Recognizes how each one was cooked
  • Judges which database entries are the same food as yours
  • Works out which muscles a workout used
  • Drafts the entry
  • Answers your questions

Code

Code does the arithmetic.

  • Nutrients per ingredient, from database values
  • The cooking adjustment
  • Calories from the macronutrients
  • Calories burned, from MET values adjusted for effort and terrain
  • Training load per muscle

Example: one serving of spaghetti bolognese. Values are illustrative.

AI Deduced

AI estimates are labeled. When no database entry fits, AI estimates the values, and Anfold marks them as estimates.

Every nutrition value carries a label.

Verified Database
Straight from a nutrition database entry, for a food in the same state you ate it.
Verified Database, Transformed
Database values recalculated for how the food was cooked, for example raw broccoli recalculated as steamed.
AI Deduced
An AI estimate, used when the database has no fitting entry or is missing a value.

Example meal, as the app lists it. Labels shown are for the macro values.

You review before anything counts.

Anfold drafts each meal and workout you describe. You check it, change what looks off and accept it. Only accepted entries count toward your daily and weekly totals.

Example entry, sped up. In the app, this may take longer.

How your daily targets are set

Your calorie target starts as arithmetic: your resting energy use from the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, multiplied by your activity level. If you chose to lose or gain weight, that change is applied once, as a fixed number of calories per day, and a safety floor keeps the result from going too low. Vitamin and mineral targets start from dietary reference intakes. An AI step then reviews these starting values against your profile and changes one only where your profile gives a reason.

Where the limits are

These are estimates, not measurements. Loosely described portions, restaurant recipes and home cooking all add uncertainty, and so does every value AI had to estimate. Anfold is for personal tracking. It is not a medical device or a substitute for professional advice.
